Letter is 8.5 × 11 inches, or 216 × 279 mm. It is the paper in almost every printer in North America, which makes it the practical choice for a home-printed poster even though the A series tiles more tidily.
The difference is worth knowing. A4 halves cleanly, so A4 tilings land on standard frame sizes. Letter does not: two sheets across in portrait gives 17 inches of width, three gives 25.5, four gives 34. Those are close to but not exactly the common US poster sizes of 18 × 24 and 24 × 36 inches. If you are printing for a standard frame, aim slightly over and trim the outer edge.
A 4000 × 3000 photo across two Letter portrait sheets comes to 6 sheets (3 across × 2 down). In landscape the same picture comes to 9 sheets (3 across × 3 down), which is usually fewer sheets for a wide image.
If you have Legal or Tabloid in the drawer, both are supported and both cut down the number of joins. Legal is 8.5 × 14 inches, the same width as Letter with more length. Tabloid is 11 × 17 inches, which is two Letter sheets in one, and it halves the join count for the same finished size.
